September 22nd to October 23rd - “Libra, Balancing the Scales”

#11, Justice is Libra's ruling tarot card.
from Ciro Marchetti's
"Legacy of the Divine Tarot"©

Libra has the distinction of being the only sign in the Zodiac to be represented by an object, rather than a person, or creature.  There’s lots of other neat stuff about Libra too. This constellation was named by the Romans in early B.C. They recognized that the Sun entered this particular star grouping each September at Equinox and stated that Libra represented balance and the divine justice of Caesar. (Clearly, gladiatorial games had yet to be invented.) Greek and Arabic astronomers originally mapped the cluster as part of Scorpio.  The names for the brightest stars in Libra, Alpha Libra, or Zubenelgenubi and Beta Libra, or Zubeneschamali, in Greek mean ‘southern claw’ and ‘northern claw’ respectively.  Libra also contains the oldest star in our known Universe named, Methuselah (or, HD140283).

Libra is a cardinal sign that carries strong yang, or male, energy.  Yang energy is direct and very active. (Wands) This means that people born under the sign of Libra are constantly in motion, wondering what’s around the next river bend.  They have a natural joie de vivre that draws people to them.  Libra is ruled by Venus and in turn, rules the seventh house of the Zodiac.  This combination is literally a marriage made in Heaven. The seventh house rules marriage, partnerships and intimate relationships – Venus’ forte.  Librans are idealistic, romantic and can see past the immediate.

charm, Librans are also known for their diplomacy and concern for others.  Their primary goal in life is to achieve balance and harmony both within themselves and in the world around them.  As an air sign, their focus is intellect and the mind. (Swords) They are known to bridge gaps between opposing sides and they make excellent union negotiators and mediators – although they are also known for jumping up on a soapbox in a heartbeat.  A Libra person is happiest being of service to others.  However, they often shortchange their own needs and desires while caring for those closest to them.  Libra is a highly social sign and its people are often the life of the party.  They also make wonderful hosts at their own soirees.

While grounded Libra is all easygoing charm and sharing, ungrounded or, negative Libra is resentful, moody and changeable.  People can easily talk a Libran into something simply by using flattery – their Achilles heel. They do love to be adored. Also, when ungrounded, a Libra becomes mired in their need to balance matters.  They will revisit and revise their conclusions to exhaustion and still not come up with a final plan.

Libra’s tarot associations are #11, Justice (There’s that balance and diplomacy again.) and through its ruling planet Venus, #3, The Empress (Who doesn’t like to party in the Empress’ garden?). In relationships, Libra is best with other air signs like Gemini, or Aquarius.  Opposites like Leo, Aries and Sagittarius can work too, plus add some interesting sparks.

This portion of September represents balance and Libra has so much to teach us on that score.  Enjoy your Libra friends and colleagues. They keep us in check and balance our world.  Without them we’d all likely be spinning out into space.

Aries, March 21st - April 20th - Living With the Ram Without Getting Fleeced

Aries' tarot association is
#4, The Emperor from
"Wizard's Tarot"© by Corrine Kenner
and John J. Blumen
Aries the Ram is a cardinal sign, meaning it is the first zodiac sign of a specific season.  In this case, the season is spring. Cardinal signs are highly motivation.  Aries, doubly so, because it's not only the first sign in springtime, but is also the first sign of the zodiac year.

Aries people are optimistic and gregarious. They jump into a new venture or situation with both feet and usually with a high degree of success. They make excellent friends because of their caring, generous natures, as well as their leadership skills. Aries’ natural enthusiasm draws people to them. You want to do things for Aries just to see them smile and do their happy dance. Use caution though, because you don’t want to spoil an Aries. They are born with the knowledge that they are the first sign and in their minds that gives them an entitlement to the things they want. Standing between an Aries and their goal can be darn right foolhardy.

Ram people are easily offended. Notice I didn’t say they are overly sensitive. They are not. Aries is a fire sign ruled by both Mars and Pluto. Gee, can you say moody? Mars carries aggressive energy and Aires isn’t one to shy away from confrontation. Unfortunately, they are also known for becoming childish or even throwing full blown temper tantrums when they are thwarted. Aries best relationships are with other fire signs (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius).

The tarot card for Mars, ruling planet of Aries, is
#16, The Tower. From "Legacy of the Divine Tarot"©
by Ciro Marchetti
The natural leadership and energy of Aries makes them very good at heading up new projects or endeavors.  When they are focused, they are focused. Rams are what I refer to as ‘first string’ people.  They insist on being in the starting lineup and are never content to warm the bench.  In their world, team is definitely spelled with an I.  However, ram people are easily bored. While Aries is great at getting the ball rolling, halfway through the game you’re likely to look down the field and find that they’ve headed off to the snack bar.

Aries birthstone is diamond.  Hard head, hard stone.  In tarot, their ruling cards are # 4 The Emperor (hardness, authority, rules and structure - hmmm I sense a theme here) and the ever dynamic and irresistible, Queen of Wands (creative action, achievement, self assurance).

Aries of a special, charismatic people and life around them is rich and vibrant.  Celebrate the Aries in your life this month.

Astrology Watch - September 2012, Shebang!

The word on the web amongst astrologers this month is, Shebang!  Although opinions vary on whether the cosmic winds blow fair or foul, there's one thing all astrologers agree upon regarding September's astrological forecast.  We've got some power going on out there folks.

The Sun and Mercury are on a road trip through Virgo right now.  Mercury, who also happens to be Virgo's ruling planet, governs the mind and communications, much like the suit of Swords does in Tarot.  What we are currently seeing is Virgo's attention to detail and analytical thinking, supped up by Mercury's intensity.  The Sun and Mercury are conjunct on September 10th, lending us a quickness of mind.  This mental agility comes in handy when dealing with complex endeavors.  Those of us who've planted conceptual seeds and nurtured them carefully throughout the summer saw our first seedlings pop up at the end of August.  We began to act upon our ideas.  Now is the time to take the next step.  Transplant your ideas into a larger pot.  (Okay - totally done with the gardening metaphors now) However, stay practical in your approach. Remember:  Analyze and pay attention to the smallest details.  Let the Virgo/Mercury mix guide you.

On September 6th, Venus enters Leo.  Behold the lioness.  She hunts.  She stalks.  She comes in for the kill.  Feminine energy runs high this month and guess what?  It runs straight into Mars in Scorpio.  Shebang, remember?  This square sets the stage for high drama is relationships, whether personal or professional.  We have particularly quick-minded lionesses circling their kill, not so certain they want to give any portion of it to the lion.  And she's probably singing Aretha Franklin's "Respect" as she hunkers down for her meal. Oh, she's just a tad bit territorial.  Lions, bolstered by Martian influences and being who they are, don't  understand why they are not being given their due.  In turn, lions might wish to retreat into their caves - a desire that should be honored.  Ladies may feel under-appreciated during this square and men may not understand why.  Hopefully you dusted off your copy of "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus" in June ( see blog Strawberry Moon) as I suggested.  It's still one of the best relationship books out there and very timely this month.

Mercury leaves Virgo on the heels of the New Moon and enters Libra on the 16th.  Libra is about balance and we will begin to see a turn from cool, analytical communications towards a more genial, diplomatic approach.  The Major Arcana card for Libra is # 11, Justice.  In Tarot, Justice is about karma and fairness.  Be sure that what you've put out into the Universe this month has been fair.  Otherwise, you know what we say about karma.

We are continuing to pull power from the Uranus - Pluto square.  Individually, as well as collectively, we can get out in front of this energy and use it to release old concepts and welcome new ideas.  Again, this energy allows us to explore our individuality.  Our biggest advances as a civilization are built on the backs of just this sort of exploration.  Instead of asking 'why' our greatest innovators have always asked, 'why not.'  Step out of the pack.  Sure, it's not as safe.  Self-determination can be a scary thing.  But look at it this way; it's harder to hit a moving target.

We have the Equinox on September 22nd.  Can't you just smell the cider?  And this month's Full Moon is in Aries.  I'll be touching on these events later this month.  In the meantime, my key phrase for the month is 'self-determination.'  You are the sum total of what you choose to put into your life.  No more, no less.  No one has the right to determine your reality but you.  September is your month, the cosmic influences yours to do with as you choose.   You can step out and determine your course, or try to stay put and let yourself be tossed about on the winds of change.  Remember, though, you're not really alone.  We're all out there with you, regardless of where and how we live.  We are all connected and the fate of one has an impact, direct or not, on us all.  We can move forward together.

Below is a list of Tarot cards and corresponding planets and signs.  Consider the lessons in these cards as they appear in your readings this month, or use them as focal points for mediation.  Enjoy!
