Nine of Pentacles - “Authority, Autonomy and Flying High”

RWCS, US Games Edition©
The Nine of Pentacles
What is she whispering to the bird?

The suit of Pentacles represents the element of earth and the material world.  In tarot, nines speak to us of compromise and difficulties, but if that’s the case, why does the woman in the Nine of Pentacles look like she’s doing so well? She stands in a field of dreams made reality – calm and elegant, seemingly without a care.  Is it a facade, or does she really have a nifty investment strategy tucked away somewhere?

The Nine of Pentacles shows us someone (in this particular case a female, though the card lesson transcends sexual definition) who no longer struggles to secure their day to day existence. As in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the basic survival levels, food, shelter, clothing, have been surpassed.  Her current level of security and comfort allows, not only the expression of grace and beauty in her life, but also the ideation of a higher self.

Clear and sunny skies always offer
encouragement even when you turn inward
RWCS, The Sun, US Games Edition©
A clear sky in the background denotes fair weather.  Two trees frame the world of the card, acting as a gateway to a rich and fertile vineyard.  The woman in the Nine of Pentacles hasn’t passed through the gates to this land without compromises. She is alone, turned away from the sun and turned inward towards herself.  Her right hand rests on a stack of pentacles; her casual possession of them born from her sense of security.  Her head and shoulders rise above the landscape indicating a higher connection with the universal flow.  She is elegant, graceful and assured of her position in the world.  A falcon perches on her left hand.  Its head is hooded like all trained hunting birds.  The hood keeps the falcon calm while it waits the commands of its mistress and the opportunity to take flight.

Some tarot analysts view the hooded bird as a symbol of the

lady’s darker nature held in check by her strength of will.  Others believe the bird represents stifled creativity and dreams – a necessary sacrifice some would say in attaining goals.  I disagree. I prefer Alfred Hitchcock’s explanation for why the bird is there.  In his masterpiece of environmental horror, “The Birds,” Hitchcock uses a lone seagull circling high over the town of Bodaga Bay to present a bird’s eye view of the movie’s world. In the Nine of Pentacles, the hunting bird is the omnipresent eye that gives our lady a broad over-view of her territory.  Her bird symbolizes imagination, creativity and focused skills.  Instead of representing a dark side, the bird lifts the woman beyond her own limited perceptions allowing her to implement her talents.  The bird’s hood represents not only her control, but her discretion as well.

Meanings for the Nine of Pentacles include discipline, self-reliance and sacrifice to obtain a goal.  The problem with using the word ‘sacrifice’ in what otherwise is a motivational card is that people frequently misunderstand the meaning of the word.  Its root word is ‘sacred,’ not ‘suffer.’  Too often people shy away from their dreams because they believe they must sacrifice – suffer a deprivation – to reach them.  Not so.  The woman is the Nine of Pentacles knows her worth, both inside and out.  She may appear to be alone, but so for all of us who take on a new challenge in life.  Ultimately, the burden of succeeding rests upon our shoulders, no one else’s.

Use the positive messages about success and reward in the Nine of Pentacles to keep you on target no matter what type of goal you set for yourself.  Meditate by focusing on the imagery of this card and, like the falcon in the picture, you’ll soar above your perceived limitations.

Mercury in Leo, August 8th - August 23rd - “Communications and Creativity”

There’s a little of the proverbial silver tongued devil in all of us
when Mercury visits Leo.  How much depends on whether or not you have Leo in your natal chart.  If you do, consider a career in sales, or running for political office, because you, my friend, have a superior gift of gab, especially right now.  Mercury in Leo effects all of us in varying degrees.  All of us will notice that in the next couple of weeks we’ll have more of an urge to speak up and get our message across to the world.  The problem arises when we allow ourselves to be influenced by Leo’s negative side, i.e. the ego.

The Sun is ruler of the sign, Leo

There are essentially two ways we communicate – through our sense of self, or through our heart.  When you engage your sense of self, or ego to help you determine how, or what you communicate, you put yourself and your feelings of self-importance before the truth of any message you’re trying to convey.  Our ego demands to be fed first and its favorite meal consists of feelings of entitlement, rightness and superiority. The heart is another matter entirely.  Communications from your the heart, sans ego, looks for the truth in all matters.  You more keenly discern a situation and it becomes easier to respect the needs of others and to response to those needs instead of simply reacting to them.

Enough with the cautionary tales already!  Mercury in Leo is

here for us to enjoy and enjoy it you will.  The stories you relay to others will be more colorful, your humor, quicker and your enthusiasm, infectious.  Mercury in Leo carries great creative energy as well.  Dust off your sewing machine, dig out that manuscript you started last summer.  Express yourself in a myriad of ways: Gardening, cooking, painting or general fix up.  The message from Mercury this month is very clear.  Engage in life, honestly and directly.  No sulking, no hiding.  You have something to say.  Express it positively and with love.

July 23rd - August 22nd, Leo, the Lion - “Walking With Pride”

Leo's ruling tarot card, #8 Strength
Steampunk Tarot©
by Barbara Moore and Aly Fell

It is said that pride is a sin and that it ‘goeth before a fall.’ However, when you look at a typical Leo, you don’t see pride in the negative sense of the word.  You see self-assurance and a steadfast commitment towards creating something better in life.  For Leo that doesn’t necessarily mean having more, or having the best.  Lion people generally seize opportunities that make things better for all concerned.  They recognize life’s inequities and make a whole-hearted commitment to fix them.

Leo is the fifth sign in the Zodiac’s wheel.  It is a fixed sign connected to the element of fire.  In layman’s language, this means that Leo is consistent and dependable.  The element of fire makes them idealistic, passionate and energetic.  The sign of Leo the Lion carries male energy and as a result, Leos appreciate direct action and plain speech.  They have little tolerance for ego-driven, mean-spirited people.

Lions are hard workers. Granted, they love their down time, but you should stand clear when they decide to act.  They are natural leaders; both idealistic and confident in their resources.  Leos don’t give up easily on the people or situations that are important to them. They are, by no means, fair weather friends and often assume responsibility for everything in their world and in yours too, if you let them.  Leo

is ruled by the Sun which lends a particular glow, or magnetic mystique to their leonine natures.  You yearn to be invited to their parties and to bask in their light.  Naturally, their gemstone is the luscious, rich ruby.

Although outwardly confident, Leos harbor insecurities just like anyone else.  The difference is that lion people feel the fear and do it anyway - whatever ‘it’ happens to be.
Lest you think Leo the Lion is the most perfect sign in the Zodiac, think again.  Off center, ungrounded Leos are arrogant, boastful, pompous and selfish.  They can be easily flattered and therefore are easy to manipulate.

Lions love amour.  They give much in terms of loyalty and adoration to their mates and likewise, they expect much in return.  They deal best with other fire signs such as Leo, Aires and Sagittarius.  Their opposites, Gemini and Aquarius also stir their heart strings.  Moody and sexual Scorpio brings about a glorious and sometimes frightening clash of will and passion.  Boy, howdy – keep a fire extinguisher handy for that one.

Tarot’s #19, The Sun rules Leo’s governing celestial body – the Sun.  Handy, huh?  In tarot, the Sun means greatness, vitality and self-assuredness.  Pretty much sums it up for Leo, doesn’t it?  Leo’s ruling card is (of course) #8, Strength.  That’s probably why the classic depiction shows a maiden soothing a lion through compassion and understanding.  Power through, never power over.  That’s Leo for you.  Leos are complex and extreme, but here’s the thing.  Leos are never by nature, dull.

Major Arcana No. 19, The Sun - Pay It Forward

The battle with your shadow-self in over and now you get to ride a pony around the garden, naked, with a plume on your head.  We've talked about free will before.  Don't blame me if you get arrested, or at the very least, get a bad sunburn.  Flowers are blooming, you are innocent, open and happy.  Be encouraged.  Life is filled with possibilities and it's time to find ways to express your joy in the moment.  Just as The Moon (No. 18) portrayed your doubts and anxieties in the shadows of the rocky lunar landscape,  The Sun offers a warm, fertile place to grow our dreams and make them a reality.

It's all too easy to let our anxiety and fear take hold of us.  We become focused on lack and scarcity.  We also stop living in the moment and that's when we get blindsided by issues and problems caused by not being present in our own life.  The Sun encourages you to join the dance and explore your potential.  Sunshine is for everyone.  There are no judgments.  All you have to do is show up and pay attention.

A friend of mine received an envelope in her mail this week.  It wasn't an ad,  or the chance  to make millions.  It was the identification that she'd lost on a hiking trip in the Columbia River Gorge a month earlier.  There was a note enclosed that simply said, "Pay it forward."  This could just be a pleasant little story about the kindness of strangers, but it isn't.  There's much more to it than that.  My friend had strayed off the path in The Moon.  It wasn't entirely her fault, she got bombarded by the Universe and ran into the shadows for cover.  Heck, we've all done the same thing and we all know people who've chosen to never come back.  But a wonderful thing happened for my friend.  She asked herself why she'd decided to stop being present in her own life.  Why did she stop taking responsibility for her journey and allow other people and their energy to effect her?  In that moment of realization, she stepped back into the moonlight and headed for the sunrise.

The decision to take accountability and make positive changes in our lives is never easy.  You have to face the issues that made you surrender your control in the first place.  It takes a strong light to see things clearly and as we step from the darkness into the sunlight, we naturally squeeze our eyes shut.  But slowly, our vision adjusts and the fresh air and birdsong fills us with enough hope that we gain the courage to open our eyes.  Once our eyes are opened, we can see our reality and garner the perspective we need to make changes.

I received a call from my friend shortly after her moment of clarity.  It wasn't a call filled with woe, or asking for a pity party.  She gave me a short list of what she wanted in her life.  Not her problems, mind you, but her solutions to them along with her goals.  My friend had stepped into the garden of The Sun.  She told me about losing her identification and stated with conviction that someone would find it and return it to her.  Three weeks later that's exactly what happened.  Amazing occurrences continue to happen in her life, her problems, while not entirely cleared up, are becoming manageable and her goals, suddenly more attainable.

Stories like my friend's encourage all of us when we find ourselves lurking in the lunar shadows.  If The Sun has shown up in your reading, follow it with joy and an open spirit.  As miraculous things unfold in your life, own them.  By being present and focused, you've brought them to you.  And as the stranger reminded my friend, "Pay It Forward."
